Call for Papers for the Irish Museums Association Annual Conference

Museums for Society: Towards a Cultural Democracy

The Irish Museums Association (IMA) would like to invite members and professionals working in museums, galleries and cultural sector to present short papers, of 15 minutes duration, at the IMA Annual Conference in Dublin, on Friday 26 February 2015 between 11am and 5pm.

Deadline for receipt of submissions: Monday, 1 December 2015
Conference venue: National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin
Conference dates: Friday, 26 — Sunday, 28 February 2016

Inspired by the 1916 Proclamation of the Irish Republic, the IMA conference proposes to examine Museums as civic institutions with an important role to play in the social, cultural and educational life of society. They hold, interpret and exhibit their collections - the tangible and intangible heritage of humanity - on behalf of the public. They should therefore be ideally placed to help define and enhance a sense of citizenship and belonging, but are they living up to their potential? Do our audiences really feel ownership of "their" museums? Is a democratic museum possible?

Of particular interest are submissions relating to the above theme, including but not limited to:

 The museum as a platform for exchange and producer of knowledge, a safe space for civic dialogue and democratic debate

 How museums are ensuring active participation and that new or temporary citizens voices are heard

 The ‘grassroots’ museum: the citizen’s role in developing and shaping the museum

 Project-based presentations relating to cooperative projects that enhance and strengthen the museum’s place in the broader community

Please email your submission to by Monday, 1 December, 2015. It must include:

 Speaker’s name and contact details (phone and email)

 Speaker’s Biography (150 words max)

 Title of Presentation

 Abstract of presentation (200 words max)

Selected speakers will receive registration tickets for the full Conference. Presentations that fall within the scope of the IMA’s Annual Journal, Museum Ireland, will be considered for publication in 2016.

The selection committee comprises Brian Crowley, Pearse Museum — OPW; William Blair, Ulster Museum; Dr Emily Mark-Fitzgerald, University College Dublin; Anne Hodge, National Gallery of Ireland; Aoife Ruane, The Highlanes Gallery and Gina O’Kelly, Irish Museums Association.
