Education is at the heart of The Heritage Councils work programme.  With knowledge comes a greater sense of responsibility and appreciation of the value of Heritage as it contributes to our quality of life.

Fota Digital Learning Zone

Fota Digital Learning Zone supports teachers and students using Fota House and Gardens to create rich learning opportunities through enquiry and exploration. Grant-aided by the Heritage Council in 2010, it is multidisciplinary in approach and has been designed to appeal to teachers and students of Transition Year and Leaving Certificate History, History & Appreciation of Art and English. The Digital Learning Zone offers ways to extend learning experiences through first hand contact with Ireland’s history and heritage.

There are three elements to this resource which enrich visitors' experience:

Teacher’s Page
A selection of task-led units have been developed which are linked directly to the curriculum. These have defined learning objectives and are designed to enhance students’ understanding of Fota House and its stories. The themed units contain pre and post-visit activities as well as suggestions on what to do when groups visit Fota House. They also have lots of easy to use background history and information to enable teachers prepare for and plan their visit.

Resource Gallery
The resource gallery contains a wealth of contextualised primary and secondary sources and archive documents. These have been carefully chosen in order to assist teachers put key themes into context.

These are a range of research assignments that can be solved online using hyperlinks. WebQuests are designed to give students an opportunity to carry out small scale research tasks through accessible, real and relevant resources.
