National Heritage Week kicks off This Weekend

Try your hand at medieval brewing, explore Loop Head Lightkeeper’s House, take part in an excavation dig in Merrion Square, experience life in a WW1 trench, become a rock detective  or visit some of the many historic homes opening their doors for National Heritage Week.

Friday 22nd August 2014: Over the next eight days, over 400,000 people are expected to take part in National Heritage Week, which kicks off tomorrow, Saturday 23rd August and runs until Sunday 31st August. This year the week has hit a new record with over 1800 events due to take place nationwide, the majority of which are FREE to attend.

The official opening of National Heritage Week will take place in Merrion Square tomorrow, Saturday 23rd August from 11 am — 4pm, where families will be able to enjoy Archaeofest. Organised in conjunction with the Institute of Archaeologists of Ireland, the event will feature a bouncy dolmen, flint knapping, a Viking combat display, a giant excavation pit for kids to explore, traditional skills demonstrations, face painting and a tent full of archaeological specialists waiting to identify what you have dug up in your garden.

Speaking ahead of the week, Ian Doyle, Head of Conservation, Heritage Council commented, “Heritage week has now become one of the biggest cultural events on the Irish Calendar, with 1800 events scheduled to take place across the country over the next 9 days. The diversity of events taking place during National Heritage Week is what makes it unique. We expect over 400,000 people to attend events across the country during the week and we hope that towns and villages across Ireland will experience a positive knock-on economic impact as people attend events.

Whether its medieval castles, wildlife walks, music and poetry recitals, traditional skills demonstrations, historical reenactments, storytelling or simply exploring Ireland’s rugged coastline there is something for everyone during National Heritage Week.  To find out what is happening in your area, log on to www.heritageweek.ie , or pick up a copy of the Event Guide in your local tourist information office.”
