Seeking Households with Traditional Dressers

Michaels own grandmother, Jane Fortune, and her dresser Wexford (2012)

Artist Michael Fortune is currently seeking households with traditional dressers in Counties Tipperary, Carlow, Waterford and Mayo.

The Dresser Project is a new body of work being conducted by Michael throughout the counties of Mayo, Waterford, Carlow and Tipperary for their 2015 Bealtaine Festival Programme. Starting in May, Michael will travel each county documenting their particular dressers through a combination of photography, film and story. The foundation for the artists particular interest in this subject stems from his own recently deceased 103-year-old grandmother’s dresser and how the constantly evolving and ever changing displays reflect the experiences, lives and values of their keepers.

Over the course of this work Michael hopes to document fifteen dressers per county. If you know of any dressers or maybe have one yourself or in your own family, Michael would love to talk to you. However big or small, plain or ornate the dresser is, please contact him by phone on 087 6470247 or by email at

The Dresser Project has been supported by the Arts Departments of Carlow, Mayo and Tipperary County Council and Waterford City and County Council, in collaboration with The Folklore Department of University College Cork and The National Museum of Ireland - Country Life in County Mayo.
