Museums & Archive Content

Collections of diverse objects such as books, coins, vintage cars, boats and farm machinery provide a link with our past. The preservation of such collections is an important part our Museums and Archive work.

Foynes Flying Boat Museum Archive

Foynes Flying Boat Museum holds a very important maritime collection detailing the history of the Shannon Estuary, Foynes Port and the influence of local affluent families on the development of the area. During 2012 the Museum focused on interpreting, cataloguing and preserving the maritime collection to international archival standard, complementing the opening of its new maritime exhibition area. The museum received €8,000 in grant-aid from the Heritage Council towards this work.

The archiving process has now been completed and many of the gems of the collection have gone on display within the museum, showcasing the collection and sharing its stories with a wider audience. Local VTOS students and students from the University of Limerick, who were studying the historical development of the area also contributed to the archiving process. As part of the project, the Foynes Harbour Master Shipping Registers (1890-1904 and 1930-1947) have been digitised and will be made available on the museum's website.
