European Commission’s Natura 2000 Award opens for a second year of applications.

The annual award is open to any entity involved in activities related to Natura 2000. Local and national authorities, businesses, site managers, land owners, NGOs, educational institutions and individuals from all 28 EU Member States are all eligible to apply. The Natura 2000 Award is dedicated to rewarding excellence in the management and promotion of the network and its objectives and to raising awareness about Natura 2000 and its benefits to European citizens.

To this end, in addition to the five category prizes, an “EU Citizen’s Award” will be introduced this year, with the public being encouraged to vote for their favourite application. The call for applications was launched today, with a deadline of 21 January 2015.

The winners will be announced at a high level ceremony in Brussels on Natura 2000 Day — 21 May 2015. We would greatly appreciate your support in raising the profile of the Award and reaching out to all those involved in the Natura 2000 network. Please spread the word to ensure as wide a range of potential applicants as possible are informed. For more information on how to apply, please consult the website: ec.europa.eu/environment/nature/natura2000/awards/ .

For specific questions/suggestions, please contact the Secretariat of the Natura 2000 Award: n2000awards@adelphi.de
We hope that this Award will prove to be an effective tool in raising awareness of Natura 2000 and demonstrate its central role in conserving and sustainably managing Europe’s unique nature. Yours sincerely, Angelo Salsi and Stefan Leiner Heads of Units of DG ENV E3 LIFE Nature and DG ENV B3 Nature
