Policy Proposals for Ireland's Towns

Roughly a third of people live in towns, with another third living in the big cities. Irish Towns have many qualities, some of them overlooked, and they are experiencing rapid change. Many of our main streets are losing their historic urban character, their cultural and social value and their economic vitality through both under-use and over development.

It is in everyone's interest that these assets should be properly and sustainably used and that the government should collect the information and formulate a national policy on the importance of Irish Towns.

In this document the Heritage Council provides several recommendations for the future or Irish towns.
